Hi there...a few times now, I’ve noticed that ALL files that I have in a couple of folders will get moved to the trash. Since I’m in the Box environment regularly, I notice what’s happened and can go to the trash and restore all…which brings them all back. But obviously this is pretty concerning. I go into the trash and can see that the file says it’s been deleted by me…

I have 2FA setup for login, so I don’t think security is an issue. But I am at a loss for how this has happened 3-4 times now. Anyone have any insight into what might be happening.

Hi @YourFavLender

Welcome to Box Community and we’re happy to assist!

I just have a few questions for you while we investigate,

  • How did you get notified that your files are deleted?
  • How do you normally access your Box files, is it through the Box web browser or your local Box folder? If it’s the latter, can we confirm your Operating System and Box version?
  • When did you notice that your files have been deleted?
  • Is this a highly collaborated file/folder?

We wait for your response!

In the meantime, have a wonderful weekend ahead!

I didn’t get notified that they were deleted by the system. A few of the times, I went to work on a file and saw that all of the files were gone. I looked in the trash folder and can see all the files there...so I restore them and continue on. This last time, a client mentioned that they could no longer see the files, and I went and saw that they were gone also. When I check the trash, all of the files are there and say in the activity section that they were deleted by me. I checked and do not have autoremove/delete selected in the elipses options.

The files are generally only accessed by me and one client. I think it’s happening in my entire directory structure across clients. So I have a folder shared with client 1...a separate folder shared with client 2, folder 3 shared by just me and my business partner and no external clients. All folders/files are getting deleted, saying that I’m the one deleting them.

For timing...it said this time that I deleted them on April 30th….and I (or rather my client) noticed today.

I do use the desktop sync option so that I can drag and drop files from my local computer to shared box folders.

Thanks for the questions. I’m at a loss at why this could be happening.

Hi @YourFavLender

My apologies for the delay, and I appreciate your detailed response,

Apart from what you’ve already shared, can we confirm the Operating System running in your machine and the version of your Box for Desktop Application?

We wait for your reply!

Of course!

Windows 10 Professional (10.0.19045)

Box Drive 2.44.209

It happened again. On May 10th, all of the files in my Box folders were shown as being deleted (by me). A client notified me that they couldn’t see the shared files, and I had to restore all of them from the Trash.

Edit: I’m going to uninstall the Box desktop client as I suspect that something related to that is the problem.
