I’m using the Obsidian app to learn Mandarin, and it creates markdown files. I back it all up to Box.

I came across a problem where I can’t create files with pinyin in the names. Mandarin has a lot of homophones, and I wanted to be able to organise them as they come up.

As an example, take yi. It could be written yī, yí, yǐ, or yì, according to whichever tone it takes. However, I can’t create filenames using any of the variants with a tone as Box sees them all as ‘yi’, telling me I’ve already named a file this.

I was hoping that someone, even if they aren’t using pinyin, might have needed to create names in languages that use diacritics of any other kind that might have generated this conflict.

When I try it doesn’t change the tone mark over the word, but it does append my email address because there’s a naming conflict. If I put a third pinyin with another tone it does the same, but adds a 2 to the end of the email, and so on. This makes a mess within Obsidian.

I don’t have any problem creating file names like this on my PC that is running Windows, which might be taken care of when you install the Chinese keyboard, etc.

If anyone has a solution to help overcome the problem I’d appreciate it.

Hi @Dave_B 👋 Welcome to Box Community! It's great to know that you're leveraging tools like Obsidian app to enhance your language learning process. 💙

However, I wanted to provide a quick note regarding file and folder names, particularly when using Box for storage or synchronization.

Box supports file and folder names that conform to the Unicode Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP) characters and may not fully support characters beyond the BMP range (e.g. certain extended Unicode characters or less common glyphs).

While your concern is not related to uploads, please check the article: Troubleshooting Uploads to Box regarding file/folder names:

File/folder names are case-insensitive (no distinction between “a” and “A”) and accent-insensitive (no distinction between “a” and “ă”). You can’t have a file/folder titled with “Test” and “tèst” in the same directory as the file/folder name must be unique in each directory.

Sorry for any limitations. I would recommend you share the idea about file/folder naming in Box Pulse and help us shape the future of Box! 🤗

Hi Jey Bueno

Thanks for your response. I did suspect that it was something like this, though I hadn’t found that article.

I will try to remember to do what you recommend. Perhaps if there are enough people who have a similar problem with naming files a solution can be found.

All the best.

Hello @Dave_B 🤗 You’re most welcome! Yes, this is an expected behaviour when naming files beyond the BMP. We also look forward for future updates to enhance this feature as we continue evaluating our customers’ feedbacks and ideas.

Have a great day! 💙
