When you add or open a file in Box Drive, Box copies the file into the Drive cache folder, which creates a local copy of the file.

Box has also confirmed that this cache folder is not encrypted.

If you work for an organization that must keep sensitive data off of local machines, what is your work around? We thought using only the Box Online option and restricting Box Drive usage was an option but all files still open locally.

The entire purpose of Box is to eliminate the need for sensitive data to be saved on local machines, but because of how the cache folder operates, that is not possible.

Hi @btemple 👋 Welcome to the Box Community!

As stated on this article, Cache information and behavior, when you add a file to Box Drive, Box copies the file into the Drive cache folder, which creates a local copy of the file; and when you open a file in your Box folder, Box Drive downloads the file to the cache folder to open the file. We’re unable to disable Box Drive’s caching functionality.

Have you checked if your folders that are available “online only”? Please check out this article about Making Content Available Offline to learn about this feature and see how to make offline folders available only online.

Also, you may want to consider uninstalling or logging out of Box Drive to delete all cached and log files.

If you need further assistance, please get in touch with our Product Support. Looking forward to have this sorted out. 🤗

Hi Jey,

Yes, we do not enable files to be available offline so by default files are online only. It unfortunately doesn’t impact how the file is opened which still opens locally and thus the cache behavior continues to come into play.

Hello @btemple 🤗

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We’ll investigate further to understand why the file is still opening locally.

I’ve raised a ticket on your behalf, so please keep an eye out for a follow-up from our Product Support team shortly. I’m thinking that the cache behavior occurs when a file is opened or added to Box Drive, rather than through the Web UI/Box Online. However, let’s wait to hear from our Support team about the best approach to address your concern.

In the meantime, you may check out the discussion about Box Drive vs. Web UI for future reference.

Have a great day! 💙
