Windows 11 modern context menu Box shortcuts - when?

Hello,

It has been a few years since Windows 11 is widely used, but since at least 3 years that I am using box.com for work on my Windows 11 laptop, every time I need to do anything box related with file that I have on box, via Windows File explorer and Box.com integration, I always need to right click a file once to see normal (modern? I guess) context menu of a file, and then click “Show more options” to see “old skool” context menu, and Box.com shortcuts are only available there.

I’ve experienced many apps that embraced the change, and made their app’s shortcuts also available in the “modern” context menu of a file in Windows Explorer (take NanaZip for example). But Box.com didn’t. Box.com shortucts remain available only from old style context menu, which requires an extra step from a user to get access to them.

It bothers me. How can I make a feautre request? If anyone experiences the same issue, please drop a note, maybe Box.com would hear us and finally add this.

Thank you for your time reading this!

👋 Hi @Artem.Sichkar, welcome to the Box Community! Thanks for sharing your insights.

Box has shipped a completely rebuilt version of Box Drive for Windows (starting with v2.47, released in August 2025) that includes a native Windows context menu integration.

What changed: The "New Context Menu"

From New Box Drive for Windows: Built on a New Architecture:

"The new context menu in Box Drive is now seamlessly integrated into the native Windows context menu, allowing users to quickly access Box-specific actions without any extra clicks."

And further:

"This streamlines workflow and improves ease of use by presenting Box options alongside standard file operations."

This means Box shortcuts now appear directly in the modern Windows 11 right-click context menu in File Explorer — no more needing to click "Show more options" to reach the old-style menu first. 👏

What version introduced this?

  • Box Drive v2.47 — introduced the new architecture and the native context menu integration (August 2025)
  • Box Drive v2.49 — the new version began rolling out by default for all customers (phased rollout)
  • Box Drive v2.49.257 — a critical update required for customers using the new architecture (February 2026)

Other goodies in the new version

The new architecture also brings:

  • ✅ "Always keep on this device" option directly in the context menu (mark files/folders for offline access)
  • ✅ Updated sync icons with multiple status indicators in File Explorer
  • ✅ ARM device support
  • ✅ Known folder redirection (Documents, Downloads → Box)
  • ✅ Faster read/write performance for cached files
  • ✅ Progress bar for file downloads in File Explorer
