When setting up 2FA via SMS, why does the phone number field not allow dashes?

The system currently only accepts numerical value and not special characters/ symbols (i.e. parentheses and dashes) on the phone number field when setting up 2FA.

Any reason for this as dashes are a very common thing that people type in when entering a phone number.
