I’m an editor collaborating on a Box with a team. I recently accessed Box on my phone, and I accidentally performed an edit to a folder; however, I’m unsure what the edit/modification to the folder was. All I know is that Box acknowledges I was the last to update that folder. I don’t believe I deleted any files within the folder, as it doesn’t appear in my trash tab. The folder I’m referring to indicates that I was the last to update the folder, but when I open that folder, I don’t see the “Updated by my name]” in the other files or subfolders integrated into the larger folder. Therefore, what other edits could I’ve made to the larger folder when I accessed Box on my phone that would register as an update to the folder?

Hi @MichaelGuaimas

Welcome to Box Community, and we’re happy to discuss what the folder update means!

If a folder indicates you were the last to update it, but individual files or subfolders within it do not show your name as the last updater, the modification was likely a folder-level action. You also confirmed no files were deleted to your trash.

Here are some possible edits you could have made to the larger folder when accessing Box on your phone that would register as an update to the folder itself:

  • Moving the folder: When a folder is moved, only one event is generated for the folder, and its contents (files and subfolders) do not generate separate events or appear in the report as having been moved or updated.
  • Renaming the folder: You can update the name of a folder directly from the information page on the Box mobile app.
  • Changing the folder’s description: Similar to renaming, you can update the description of a folder from the information page on the Box mobile app.
  • Modifying collaboration settings for the folder: This includes adding new collaborators, removing existing ones, or changing their access levels on the folder.
  • Applying or editing metadata on the folder: Metadata can be applied and updated on folders, and this adheres to folder-level permissions.
  • Syncing or un-syncing the folder: While typically a desktop client action, these are folder-level operations that could register an update.

The “Modified” field for a folder on the Box mobile app includes the name of the person who last updated the folder and the date/time of the last update.

Lastly, you can reach out to your Box Administrator in case you need a report that’ll show/confirm the file or folder activity made by your account.

Hope it helps answer your question! If you have clarifications, please feel free to reply in the thread.

Hello @Rona Box,

Thank you so much for the clarification! This helped me understand the Box platform much better.
