Very Slow Upload Speeds

I’ve been using Box for a very long time and over the last few months, uploading files to Box has become painfully slow. No matter which machine or which wifi network I’m on. Something is slowing down the connection tremendously. Would love to figure out what changed and how to fix. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

Hi @arussell

Welcome to Box Community, and we’ll assist with your issue on uploads!

Box does not limit, throttle, cap, or shape upload bandwidth. Since you are experiencing slow uploads across multiple machines and Wi-Fi networks, the issue is likely related to network routing, local security configurations, or browser-specific settings rather than a direct restriction from Box.

Here are the primary potential causes and actionable steps to diagnose and resolve the issue:

  1. First, let’s rule out browser related issues:
  2. Firewalls and antivirus software can inspect and slow down the upload process. Try temporarily disabling your local firewall or antivirus web-shielding to see if performance increases.
  3. If you are using a VPN, it can route your traffic through a different geographic location, placing your computer far from the nearest Box endpoint and severely impacting upload speeds. Try temporarily disabling your VPN to see if speeds improve.
  4. Lastly, to isolate whether the issue is with your internet connection or the route to Box, you should run the built-in diagnostic tools:
    • Box Connection Diagnostics: Go to your Box account, click your profile image in the upper-right corner, and navigate to Account Settings > Diagnostics. Under "Connection Diagnostics," click Run Test. This will perform a multi-step test to check if your connection is at an optimum level.
    • Box Test Suite: Visit https://www.box-test.com/ (https://www.box-test.com/), toggle the file size from 1MB to 10MB (recommended for high-speed connections), and click Go! to test the speed and health of your connection.

Hope it helps! Let us know in the Community if you need additional assistance.
