To many items, limit for directory is 20000 items

Is there a way around the 550 response when checking if a file exists in a directory with more than 20,000 files or a way to increase the limit?

Currently, the file exists check fails on this directory and when you dig deeper you can see that the API is returning 550 Too many items, limit is 20,000.
