When trying to upload a 302mb file, I get the error:
"This file exceeds your plan’s upload limit".. but I still have 6.2GB free? See screenshot.

What you've experienced wasn't an error regarding your available free space but your upload size limit.
The maximum file size limit for uploads to Box varies depending on your account type:
- Free personal: 250 MB
- Starter: 2 GB
- Business: 5 GB
- Business Plus: 15 GB
- Enterprise (and Digital Suites ): 50 GB
- Enterprise Plus: 150 GB
