Sync to Drive migration on Mac

I got an end of life notice for Sync.  Found a help page with contradictory advice: 1. installing Drive automatically uninstalls Sync. 2. Prerequisite for Drive is sync not installed.  How do I safely migrate to Drive?

I downloaded and began the installation of box drive, but at a certain point received a message saying the process could not continue because folders were open, but no folders were open. I tried clicking "Retry” a number of times, but nothing happened and my only choice was to click "cancel”, which I did and then restarted the computer (a Windows update was also installed during the restart).
After the restart, it looks like Box Drive has been installed, but it also looks like my Box Sync folders are still there and no space has been freed-up on my hard drive. 
I searched the various articles and help subjects but have not found any relevant information. I'll also note that although I am the Admin for 3 users (only one is actually in use), I am not a tech person and I need simple instructions to solve the issue.
