l am no longer able to upload files as my storage is reported as full (10GB out of 10GB), during a cleanup when I was in fact deleting a lot of files and also clearing the Trash.

Great news! I went ahead and fixed your storage count. To verify this, log in to box.com> Account Settings> Storage Used.
