I was forwarded a collaboration invitation, but when I click accept it redirects me to the box.com homepage for my profile without the shared folder. Is this is an issue because the invitation was not sent to me directly, or something else?

Collaboration invitations cannot be forwarded. The invitation is unique to each email address it is sent to, thus you are only being redirected into your account but not on the collaborative content. You need to reach out to the owner of this folder and request that they add you as a collaborator in the folder and that should send a unique invitation to your email.
