Another problem I'm having is that the share button is simply missing. I am the account administrator, yet I cannot share folders with my clients. I'm getting tired of so many issues with this platform.

Hi @Renato Varela,

I understand how frustrating it is when essential features like the Share button are not appearing as expected.

Here are the most common reasons why the Share button or sharing options might not be visible, along with the steps to resolve them:

1. Root-level folder collaboration restriction

Collaboration cannot be added directly to the top-level "All Files" root page. You can only share or invite collaborators to individual folders (first-level folders or subfolders). If you are looking at the root directory without selecting a specific folder, the Share button for collaboration will not be available.

2. Enterprise content and sharing settings

Even as an administrator, your enterprise-wide settings dictate which sharing options and collaborator roles are enabled:

  • External Collaboration: Navigate to Admin Console > Enterprise Settings > Content & Sharing tab > Collaborating on Content. Ensure that External Collaboration is enabled and not restricted to internal domains only or blocked by domain allowlists.
  • Shared Links Permissions: Under the Shared Links section in the Content & Sharing tab, verify that shared links are permitted for both folders and files, and check whether shared links are set to allow access beyond invited collaborators.
  • Collaboration Restrictions / Restrict Invites: Verify if "Restrict invites" is enabled. If enabled, only folder Owners and Co-owners can invite collaborators.

3. Folder-level settings and permissions

  • Check the specific folder's settings: Click the ellipsis (...) next to the folder > Settings (or view via Admin Console > Content).
  • Under Invitation Restrictions, check if "Only folder owners and co-owners can send collaborator invites" or "Restrict collaboration to within your company" is enabled.
  • Ensure you are listed as an Owner, Co-owner, or Editor on the specific folder rather than having a read-only role.

4. UI toggle / sharing sidebar

  • If you are trying to view the collaboration pane on the right side of the screen in the Box Web App, you can toggle the sidebar by clicking the sidebar toggle icon in the top-right corner to display the Sharing and Details tabs, where you can manage collaborators and enter client email addresses.

5. Sharing via Admin Console (Content Manager)

If you need to share content owned by other managed users immediately:

  • Go to Admin Console > Content (or Content Manager).
  • Locate the folder you want to share, click the More Options (...) dropdown, and select Share or Invite Collaborators.

These steps should help restore your sharing capability immediately. Please feel free to reach out if you have any other concerns.

The question I ask you is: why did this happen overnight? We didn't do anything, we didn't change anything. I'm the account administrator. I didn't alter anything in the permissions. Overnight, this stopped working.

Hi @Renato Varela, thanks for bringing this up.

When behavior like this happens suddenly, and you haven't changed any admin settings on your end, it may be caused by a browser caching glitch. To help us narrow down the issue, please try logging in via a private/incognito browser window or a different browser to see if the sharing button reappears.

In the meantime, could you please submit a ticket to our Support team? (Click to access this ticket form if you’re unable to open a case). This will allow us to safely look into your specific account logs and pull in our technical team to resolve this for you, thank you!
