I am creating a workflow that automatically applies a metadata template to a file when it is uploaded to a certain folder.  As a second step of the relay workflow, I want the file to be renamed based on a couple of the metadata attributes (e.g. effective date-customer name).  Applying the metadata template in step 1 does not automatically fill the attributes, so when the file is renamed we get a file named: (missing)effectivedate-(missing)customer.pdf.

We have Box AI enabled.  Is it possible for Box Relay to both assign the metadata template and use AI to autofill the attributes, or do you always need human intervention to hit the button for “Autofill with Box AI”.  We want the relay to both assign the metadata template and automatically use Box AI to autofill the attributes.

@matt.riley Box in case you have any insight?

Thanks!

Hi @meta.heidi

Welcome to Box Community and we’re happy to assist!

Box Relay can assign a metadata template to a file automatically as part of a workflow step. However, applying the metadata template does not automatically fill in the attribute values; these remain empty until filled.

Box AI (Box Skills) is capable of extracting metadata and filling attributes via Skills Cards, but this process is opt-in, must be configured by the Primary Admin, and typically requires triggering by uploading files into specific folders where Skills are enabled. The autofill with Box AI feature appears to require manual user intervention to initiate the extraction and population of metadata fields.

As of this message,  Box Relay workflows can’t programmatically trigger Box AI to autofill metadata attributes immediately after assigning a metadata template without human interaction. The metadata autofill via Box AI is asynchronous and may take some time to complete after upload, and users might see an indicator if the skill is still processing.

Therefore, currently, you cannot have a fully automated Relay workflow that both assigns a metadata template and immediately uses Box AI to autofill the attributes without any human action. Human intervention or a custom integration would be needed to trigger the AI autofill step programmatically.

Hope it answers the question,
