Even if I enter the authentication code displayed in the app, it says "invalid code" and I cannot log in.

Microsoft Authenticator two-step authentication adds an extra layer of security to your account. It requires two forms of identification: your password and a second verification through your mobile device. This can be notification or a verification code sent to the authenticator app.
