Question

Moving files from one folder to another on Box Drive on Tahoe (mac) downloads the contents before moving.

This seems to be a Tahoe-only issue and am hoping it’s a bug. Usually, i am able to move one folder (not downloaded, “Available online only”) from one place on box drive to another and it happens almost immediately. The contents remain available online only. On the computer that has Tahoe, if i initiate a move of a “Available online Only” folder to another “Available online only” Folder, it first downloads all the contents of that folder first, before moving. This is really detrimental to my workflow. Is anyone else running into this?

Hi @Hoffu

Welcome to Box Community, and we’ll assist so you could move folders in your local Box folder without them getting downloaded first.

This is an expected behavior if the destination folder has been ‘marked for offline’. However, you already mentioned that both folders are set to ‘available online only’.

In this case, please make sure your Box Drive is up to date. If not, update your Box Drive application. If your Box Drive is updated, you can try to manually reset your Box Drive.

To manually reset Box Drive on a Mac

  1. Quit Box Drive if it is running.
  2. Download and open the Box Reset Tool zip file.
  3. Open the Box Reset Tool from the Downloads folder.
  4. Click Reset.
    • You should see a prompt stating “Box Drive reset successfully”.

  5. Open Box from your application folder and log back in.

Note: The Box Reset Tool will write logs of actions performed to your Desktop folder under “Box-ResetTool-logs_(<current day>)”.

Once you restart Box Drive, you can review any archived unsynced files and either upload them manually or delete them to free up hard drive space.

Hope it helps! Please let us know how it goes.

Hello-

Thanks for your response. I checked for updates (none) and then did the Reset, logged back in. The same behavior exists- I go to move an “online only” folder and it downloads it before moving. I am running Tahoe 26.1 on a 2020 iMac with an intel chip. I am holding off on updating any other computers because of this behavior, so any updates would be appreciated. Thanks!
