Lost critical files on my box folder - where did they go and how can I recover them?

We have a folder containing all the financial statements for our companies portfolio. I went in today to access them however the folder is seemingly wiped out of existence. I checked the junk folder and most recent folder and there were no results for either. Where did my documents go? These files are critical to our businesses day to day activities so we need a solution ASAP

Hi @WynnRealty

Welcome to Box Community and we’re happy to assist!

Do you know if the missing folder is your owned or collaborated folder? If it’s the latter, your collaboration access may have been removed or expired and please reach out to the owner.

Additionally:

  • When items are deleted from a collaboration folder, both the owner and the person who deleted the item can recover the items from the Trash.
  • If you are removed as a collaborator from a file or folder that you've deleted, you no longer see that item in Trash. To see the item in Trash, you must be again added as a collaborator to that item.

If you happen to be the current owner of the missing folder. Kindly use your trash's filter and search function.

Hi Rona,

Thanks for the response, it was a collaborated folder, our boss previously gave a former employee access to these files and this person apparently deleted all of our files maliciously, please tell me there is some way we can recover these files. The trash been shows that its empty. Thanks!

Hi @WynnRealty

Happy Friday!

At this point, you need to find out the owner and reach out to this user.

Please note that once a folder has been deleted, it can stay in the owner’s trash for the next 30 days. If it goes beyond that, we can no longer guarantee recovery for the folder.

For more details, please see this article.
