Question

Hit monthly bandwidth limit despite "unlimited storage Enterprice" plan - what are the actual upload caps?

Hi everyone,

Last night while uploading data ~11.9TB(this month) we received an in-app notification that we've exceeded Box's monthly bandwidth limit, with a link to the "Understanding Box Bandwidth Limits" article. Our plan is listed as having no storage limit, so we were under the impression we could upload any amount of data - this was actually the key factor in our decision to use Box.

I have a few questions:

  1. What is the actual monthly bandwidth limit for our account?
  2. Now that we've exceeded it, how much will our upload/download speed be throttled? Is there a specific reduced speed, or does it vary?
  3. When exactly does the limit reset, and does our usage carry over?
  4. Is there a way to view our current bandwidth usage against the limit in the admin console?

For context, we upload a high volume of files regularly, so understanding these limits is important for planning. Any clarification - or guidance on who to contact to discuss our specific plan - would be much appreciated.

Cumulative storage is unlimited, but each user has a 1TB/mo upload/download limit.

I'd like to clarify: we're currently using 1 of 3 available seats, on Box.com's most expensive tier - Enterprise - with no limitations whatsoever. From that single user seat we've uploaded 11.9 TB. Based on the message above, we shouldn't have been able to upload more than 1 TB. The logic doesn't add up.

So my question remains open: please advise and explain how the service calculates how much we can and cannot upload.

Thank u so much

It’s not always a hard limit and it’s not instant.  I don’t know how often we run that report/check, but it’s possible that the 11.9TB was uploaded in between that window.  It may also be that we’re calculating it across an annual basis (so you’d get 12TB of uploads per year per user).  I don’t have any particular insight into the mechanics, but you’re definitely running into a fair-use policy scenario.

Thanks for your valuable response. Could you clarify - if we activate the other 2 seats we originally paid for in our subscription, will each of those seats get its own 12TB upload limit, or does the limit apply across my entire organization?

It’s 1TB per user per month (again, that may be calculated annually, I’m not 100% sure).  I suspect it is based on active users, so if you turn on the other two, then you would have 36TB/year.  I can dig in a bit more to get details around the how/when/why it’s enforced, but it’s really to prevent people from using Box like their personal Netflix.

Hello, could you please clarify the question regarding the 36 GB - I'd be very grateful. I'd also like to clarify when the account limits for bandwidth and storage reset, and what we should expect given that we've exceeded the limit by 2x. Would there be a restriction for two months, for example, if the amounts we went over accumulate - do they count as a penalty for the current month, or do they carry over to the following one?

Thank you so much!

Again, it’s not a hard-coded limit so there’s no reset, per se.  That said, I’ll check on your questions and let you know what I find out.

Rate limits should reset at the end of the month and they are indeed calculated monthly.  If you find that it’s not happening or the fair use policy email you get implies stronger action, then your best bet is to open a ticket with support.  Our product support team can work with the team that handles those situations to give you better information than you’ll generically get here.
