If I upload a Version 2 of a file, will it retain the same direct link as for Version 1 meaning that anyone with the Version 1 link will automatically get the Version 2 document when they click on their link? Need to know ASAP!

Hi Diane,

Welcome to the Box Community!

Uploading a new version of the file will not affect the shared link that is already being used. The shared link will remain the same, and it will simply point to the newly uploaded version of the file.

Thanks for your question and let us know how else we can help!

Best,

That's not my experience. I conducted a test and with V2 - a new link was created.

Hi Diane,

Box overwrites a file and and updates the version each time you:

  • use the Upload New Version button on the Web app
  • upload a file into a folder that has an existing file with the exact same name in it on the Box Web app.

Did you follow any of what was stated above to update V1 with V2?

When V2 overwrites V1, this is what I meant with uploading a new version of the file which will not affect the current shared link that is already being used. The shared link will remain the same, and it will point to the newly uploaded version of the file.

More information can be found regarding Version History in this article: https://support.box.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043697054-Accessing-Version-History
