I invited a free user to our business account and the user is unable to accept the invitation because the the user's account login prompts for a MFA code that they don't have.

Technically, the impacted user is still belongs to his/her invidual account. And since it's a login issue, please have the user to contact Box Support and use this link.
The link provided will allow you to open a ticket if you have trouble signing in.
