I recently installed box drive on a new device, and after a few hours of normal use, I've been getting bombarded with a strange error message 'unable to open folder' for many folders i have tried opening (though certainly exist within our shared documents).

We are experiencing this issue currently, a user has these messages popping up constantly despite not actually being in the process of opening or working with any folders. Does anyone know if Box has made any attempt to fix this issue?

1517490298042 - We solved this by removing Box from the Notifications in Windows.

Taskbar > Manage notifications (in the top right) > Scroll down to Box and turn it off. It has not come up again, effectively solving this for our org.

We've done that as a temporary work-around but that's far from an actual solution. If there is an issue with their application that our clients are paying for that's something their support should be attempting to resolve.

Oh I hear you, believe me. Seeing as this started over 2 years ago, we gave up on Box finding a solution and just went with this. So far so good.

Hiding all Box Drive notifications isn't a good workaround. You need to look through the logs and find out which application is trying to open the files. It is usually a security application of some kind. When you find out which application it is, do whatever you need to do to exclude the Box Drive folder. At my company, it was both McAfee and Nessus by Tenable that were reading the files. Once we whitelisted the Box Drive folder, the notifications went away.

Over 2 years later and having this issue when using Adobe applications. Locks up my file explorer, MS apps, and Adobe apps.

I logged out of Box and it resolved the issue but this isn't a long term solution as my company regularly works out of shared Box folders.

Hoping that keeping the thread alive will bring the attention from Box.

Its now December 2023 and this issue still exists.

Not even using box or any of the files when this happens.

Baffling how companies allow these issues to exist for so long.. and they take your money.. wild.

This issue is the result of softwares that scan the Box Drive location to inspect its file contents. This causes each of these files to be downloaded by Drive in succession. This is a limitation that is not able to be worked around by Drive, as when the operating system requests a file from Drive, Drive must try to deliver it. The notifications represent the volume of requests that are failing due to excessive download requests.

The solution to this issue is to exclude Box Drive from whichever software is scanning the Drive folder. As noted this is a security concern for some customers, but in practice all files that will be uploaded via Box Drive will be coming from a location that is already being scanned by this software, and should already be safe. Additionally, Box scans all files for malicious content on upload.

The response I received is below. I haven't had the user test this as it would seriously impact his productivity, so can't confirm whether this resolved our issue yet.

After taking a look at the logs, it appears that processes called "Adobe Media Encoder 2021" and "Adobe Premiere Pro 2021" are making a large number of requests on the files in your Box Drive folder.

When applications try to open files throughout all of Box, Box Drive must fetch lists of file names in every Box folder from Box.com that the user has access to. To preserve fast and reliable service for other Box users, Box.com will often reject excessive traffic like this from Box Drive, forcing Drive to slow down (i.e. rate limiting). It appears that most of the Drive popup notifications this user got were to tell the user of transient failures due to these rejections from Box.com.

As a test, can you try uninstalling these programs temporarily and see if the issue still persists? You may also want to reach out to Adobe to receive guidance on how to allow-list the necessary Box Drive folders in their programs so they aren't continually scanned:

  • C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Box\Box
  • C:\Users\username\Box
  • C:\Program Files\Box\Box

I’m having the same issue with Box Drive - an ongoing parade of hundreds of “Unable to open folder” notification messages - even though I have full access to these folder.

Does anyone know if this is an issue with all versions of Adobe Premiere Pro and Media Encoder, or just the 2021 version? I’ll be following this thread to see if there is any resolution.
