Deleting huge folder

I intentionally deleted a huge folder (1 TB) from our environment. As expected it almost instantly ended up in the trash folder.
The warning message indicated it could take "Several Hours" but 96 hours later I am still getting "The folder tree is still being deleted. Permanent delete will be available once the delete operation is complete. Please try again later." when I try to empty the trash.
Is this to be expected when there are an absurdly large number of files (6 million or so) involved?
