Converting Managed Users to Unmanaged Users

We have multiple part-time, temp employees who are students helping on a project, or affiliated, but not on the core team despite having the same organizational email extension.  Somehow, they were automatically added by Box as managed users, which they do not need to be.  How do we retain their access to Box while converting them from managed users to unmanaged users?

I have the same question. How do I convert a managed user with the same domain to an external user? We share the folder the user needs access to. She gets the link and asks her to signup and when she does she's already a managed user.
