Cannot View or Download Files

I am unable to view or download files from the folders I have access to. When I open a file, an error message states “This preview didn’t load because the document may be protected. Please try to open or download the file to view.” When I try to open the file in my browser with Acrobat, I get an error message: “File preview not available, please reload to try again.” Additionally, when I click the Download button, nothing happens. I’ve confirmed with one of the folder owners that I have access, I get the same results in both Chrome and Edge browsers, and I am not the only one on my team facing this issue. How can I fix my ability to open/download these files? Thank you.

Hi @Ryan_Box

Welcome to Box Community, and thanks for raising this error message to one of your shared files from Box. com. We’re glad to further assist!

"This preview didn’t load because the document may be protected. Please try to open or download the file to view"—typically occurs when Box's preview conversion service is unable to process a file because it is password-protected, encrypted, or has restricted permissions that block conversion.

Here’s are the quick workaround to resolve this!

  1. As the error message suggests, download the file directly to your local device and open it using its native application (e.g., Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat). If the file is password-protected, you will be prompted to enter the password to view its contents.
  2. If you believe the file should not be protected or want to verify why the preview is failing, follow these steps:
  • Re-upload the File: Sometimes, a temporary glitch during the upload process can cause conversion to fail. Try uploading the file again as a new version or under a different name to see if it converts properly on the second attempt.
  • Check for Password Protection/Encryption: Ensure that the file does not have any active password protection, read-only restrictions, or encryption enabled in its native application settings before uploading it to Box.

Hope it works! Let us know should you need additional help.
