I cannot edit documents in box. I've also attempted to open them as a google doc and it asks me to log in with my gmail account and each time takes me back to the log in page.

I had to open the main folder the document was in and then right-click it and select Open with... to open it in Google Slides. Then I could edit.
So, it seems you have to know that you're just viewing the file and have to open it in the original editor. Not sure why there isn't an easy Edit button on the preview page somewhere.
