Box launches no licensed office apps

When I am using box tools to launch any office file, it launches a version of office that is not licensed and I cannot login to with my account. I have a fully licensed version of office via my M365 subscription. I have already made sure I only have one version of office installed and the apps are set as default in default apps.

To resolve this issue, you should switch your Microsoft Office installation from the Microsoft Store build to the Click-to-Run build:

  1. Verify your current Office Build:

    • Open any native Microsoft Office application (such as Word or Excel) directly from your computer.
    • Navigate to File > Account (or Help / About depending on your version).
    • Look at the build details. If you see "Microsoft Store" listed next to the version/build number, this confirms you are running the affected build.
  2. Reinstall using Click-to-Run:

    • Uninstall the current Microsoft Store version of Office from your computer's settings (Apps & Features / Default Apps).
    • Log into your Microsoft 365 account portal (portal.office.com) using your licensed subscription credentials.
    • Download and run the official installer from your subscription page. This will install the standard Click-to-Run build of Microsoft Office.
    • Once installed, verify that your licensed account is signed in and active.
  3. Clear Box Edit Cache (Optional but Recommended):

    • If the issue persists after reinstalling, clear your Box Edit cache to ensure no stale associations remain:
      • Windows: Navigate to %localappdata%\Box\Box Edit and delete the contents of the Documents folder.
      • Mac: Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Box/Box Edit and delete the contents of the Documents folder.
      • Restart your computer and try launching the file again from Box.
