We use the  Enhanced Auto-Lock feature (see https://support.box.com/hc/en-us/articles/360061782454-Enabling-Enhanced-Lock-Unlock-on-Box-Drive). When a user opens a file, it is automatically locked, which is great.

What is supposed to happen is when a user closes the file, it is automatically unlocked. And normally that does happen.

However, quite a few times when a user closes a file, it remains locked indefinitely. And this causes confusion.

Does anyone know what causes this quirk and how to correct it?

Hi Dave,

Welcome to Box Community and glad to help!

We've created a new case and a member of our team will contact you through email, please keep an eye out.

Thanks for posting!

Any updates to this? I run into this issue daily. My co-workers end up in read-only mode on files I worked on days ago sometimes. The files that I work on, and that remain locked after I close out of it, appears it be random.

Hi, Matthew. I have no updates on my end. I think one thing that might cause this is many users have a tendency to not save/close files they are working on, and sometimes their PCs will reboot in this state. Interestingly, ANYONE can unlock a file, so that is what our users wind up doing in order to avoid opening a file in read-only mode. Best practice is for them to contact the last person who was working on that file - just in case there might be a possibility of lost work.
