I got the press release for Box Drive today and am really sad to see that this is supposed to be replacing Box Sync.  The functionality of Sync is exactly there reason I use Box - I really do not want cloud storage, I want our files on our computers not in the cloud because most of the time we do not have active internet connections.  Rest assured that I will be porting my business back to Dropbox.

I've been a Box user for over a decade now. All the way back to whenever it was they were giving free 50GB lifetime accounts for being an early adopter so probably well longer than 10 years. I've never tried to use Box Drive in place of Box Sync and after reading this thread I'm glad I haven't wasted my time with it. I've always used Box Sync across multiple desktop and mobile OS's and have never and I really mean never, had a problem or any corruption with it.

So.. all that said. I am hopeful that Box Sync never goes away. Maybe it sunsets and goes into an unsupported state but based on what I've learned here today, I think I'd be perfectly fine with that as long as I can keep using the sync app I have installed across my various systems 🙂. Aside from Google Drive, Box with Box Sync is the only other cloud storage & sync service that is so easy to use that you really don't have to think about it. Box Drive sounds like a huge move in the wrong direction for longtime Box Sync users ?

so, this post is now trending appr 1 per month.

where is box on this? any update?

with the new and here to stay WFH initiatives, seems like this topic is more important than ever.

is there a diagram somewhere that can explain all this simply?

we need remote users logged into the same 'servers' or specific project folders - basic stuff, nothing fancy.

need to locate box/drive on a d:/ drive at a few locations due to storage size - or, should all content just move to box and synch what you need? oops - there it is again....synch.

Box Drive seems great, but is horrible.  Even if you make a folder available offline, it might not include all the files there due to  some corrupt synching issue (I have Mac). It is of very limited use and for very limited types of files.

Mac user.  I agree with the comments above. I have used Box Sync for years and it has performed really well for providing online backup access to my files (which I typically access on my laptop as I don't always have wifi).  Installed Drive and Uninstalled sync. I agree that the crippled search capabilities make the product nearly unusable as a serious backup product. I could also not get it to sync my desktop folder. Reinstalled Sync. I really hope they don't retire Sync before Drive has equivalent capabilities, otherwise I would have to let our organization admin know that the product does not meet my needs.

I'd prefer not to have to migrate to DropBox, but that would be my best alternative option if Box Drive can't keep up with Sync and no longer does what it was designed to do.

I love BoxSync's capabilities. Indispensable for individual and collaborative work. We have the enterprise version.

I'm an enterprise user too. I like Box; works well, easy to use. But it's hard for me to plan if I don't know what's going on with Sync and Drive. Is Sync going to be retired? If so, when? What's the status of Drive? Is Box listening to us, and working to fix its flaws? I have users pulling toward SharePoint now. It would be impossible to get them to use Drive as it stands now.

3 years after the first question still no news on Box Drive and mark offline? Company uses an email format that is incompatible with Box but I can use with Box Sync. Box Drive won't allow me so I'm not moving to Box Drive until Box sync is well and truly dead.

I'm a personal rather than enterprise Box user.  I fear the day that Box Sync may drop dead...okay, be killed off.  I'm finding it more and more useful and flexible than I realized, by the way.  I now have files on Box.com that I want there for sharing, but don't care to have in the Box Sync folder on my local computer through the simple process of indicating NOT to sync them.  That's something I had not noted.

@box tech support: Can you give an update? When is Box Sync getting phased out? And what's the status of Box Drive's issues?

Box Sync is incredibly flexible in ways that far surpass Box Drive. I hope that Sync will be upgraded for M1 capability (Mac) in addition to Drive (beta just announced). Continued support corresponding to the large demand for Sync is needed. Otherwise, Sync WILL die a slow death, willy nilly.

@jiporter  Total agreement here.

My ongoing question is how the Box bosses interpret the word "deprecate."  Merriam-Webster's definition 3 cites the use of the word for software.  "to withdraw official support for or discourage the use of (something, such as a software product) in favor of a newer or better alternative."  To which I say "so what?"  Is Box going to forcibly remove BoxSync from my Windows 10 computer?

Deprecation in this context means no updates for new requirements in your system software, no guarantees that the app will work on your machine and a guarantee that at some point it no longer will. You use it at your own risk. Alas.

So far, no problem and Box has been about to deprecate for how many years now?  3, 4, 5, more?  There are a lot of things I do at my own risk.  Driving a car tops the list.  Alas, indeed.

Does anyone have an update on the future of Box Sync? Or improvements to Box Drive? I was just running through training on Box Drive and I still really don't like it. I keep thinking I'm missing something...
