Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone has run into this after migrating from Box Sync to Box Drive on macOS.
Environment
- macOS
- Microsoft 365 / Word / Excel / Outlook for Mac
- Box Free account
- Migrated from Box Sync to Box Drive on July 6, 2026
What I'm Seeing
After uninstalling Box Sync and installing Box Drive, Box created:
Archived - Box SyncBox Sync (backup)~/Library/CloudStorage/Box-Box
The issue is that Microsoft Office still appears to be referencing the old Box Sync data.
Evidence
-
Box Drive works correctly
- Creating a folder in:
immediately appears on Box.com.~/Library/CloudStorage/Box-Box
- Creating a folder in:
-
Word can open files from Box-Box
- Documents stored in Box-Box show up under Word's Recent files list.
- The path shown in Recent is:
Macintosh HD > Users > rs > Library > CloudStorage > Box-Box
-
Office's Box integration appears broken
- In Word, when I choose Manage Storage Accounts → Box, I receive:
"Box for Microsoft Office (Desktop) is currently disabled by your Box administrator."
- In Word, when I choose Manage Storage Accounts → Box, I receive:
-
The built-in Box location is stale
- Whenever I browse the Box location from Word/Excel/Outlook, I see folders and files dated July 6, 2026 (the migration date).
- These appear to be coming from the archived Box Sync location rather than my current Box account.
-
Box Integrations page
- Box Drive = enabled
- Box for Microsoft 365 for Web = enabled
- Box for Office does not appear connected in the same way
- Attempting to install Box for Office from Box's integrations page downloads
BoxForOffice.exe(Windows installer) even though I'm on a Mac.
Main Question
Has anyone successfully reconnected Microsoft Office for Mac to a Box Drive-based installation after migrating from Box Sync?
Specifically:
- How do I remove the stale Archived - Box Sync reference from Word/Excel/Outlook?
- How do I get Office to browse the actual Box Drive / Box-Box location rather than the old migration archive?
- Is Box for Microsoft Office (Desktop) still supported on macOS, or is Box Drive now the only supported workflow?
Any guidance would be appreciated. I have approximately 20 years of files in Box, so I'm being very cautious about removing old Box Sync references without understanding exactly what they do.
Thanks!
