Box Drive Login Loop on macOS - Standard Troubleshooting Exhausted

Description: I am experiencing a persistent login loop with Box Drive on macOS. When attempting to log in, the application redirects to the browser (Chrome) for authentication. After successfully entering credentials and completing 2FA, the browser attempts to "hand off" to the desktop app, but the app fails to register the session and prompts for login again.

System Specifications:

  • macOS Version: Tahoe 26.3

  • Box Drive Version: 2.49.255

  • Primary Browser: Chrome (up to date)

Troubleshooting Already Completed: To save time, please note that I have already attempted the following without success:

  1. Browser Cleanup: Cleared all cookies, cache, and site data for box.com and app.box.com in Chrome.

  2. Default Browser Swap: Switched the system default browser to Safari to rule out Chrome extension interference.

  3. Terminal Reset: Ran the fileproviderctl domain remove and defaults delete com.box.desktop commands to clear the local database and app state.

  4. Permissions Check: Verified that the Box extension is enabled under System Settings > Login Items & Extensions.

  5. Full Reinstall: Performed a clean uninstall and reinstall of the latest Box Drive build.

Requested Action: Since the standard local resets have not resolved the handshake issue, could you please check if there are any orphaned sessions on the server-side for my account, or provide instructions for collecting specialized logs (Box Edit or Box Drive logs) to identify where the authentication token is dropping?

I experienced the same login loop and completed the same troubleshooting steps - I even had the same sys specs as you. I was using Google to sign in but once I switched to using a password instead, I no longer experienced the login loop.

I’m not sure if you’re using a pwrd or Google but here are the steps that resolved my issue:

Remove Google Integration: If you use Google to sign in, remove the Google association in your Box.com Account Settings > Integrations tab. Log out, then try logging in, if you never set a password > Forgot Password > it sends an email > set a new password.
