The Box Drive cache folder (located at C:\[User]\AppData\Local\Box\Box\cache) keeps growing in size to 200+ GB even though I added a "MaximumCacheSize" value to the registry and set it to 25 (as detailed here https://support.box.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043695894-Technical-Information-for-Box-Drive-Administrators, and see screenshot below).


For background: the system is a Windows 10 PC with a 500GB C: drive and a 4TB 😨 drive. I installed Box Drive on the larger 😨 drive, but the cache folder is on the smaller C: drive, and I couldn't find any articles on how to change the location of that folder. 


Any help is greatly appreciated - I know that I can clear the cache manually by exiting/logging out, but it would be much better if the cache size would actually follow the limit that I set!

Welcome to Box Community and glad to help! 


As of this message, you can't modify your Box Drive location. Meanwhile, see if you could completely clear your Box Drive cache by resetting your Box Drive app manually. 


 To reset Box Drive on Windows


  1. Exit Box Drive (if it is running). If necessary, use Task Manager to end the Box.exe process.

  2. Ascertain whether any files exist in C:\users\eUSERNAME]\AppData\Local\Box\Box\unsyncedFiles. These are files that have not been uploaded to Box. If these files do exist, and if you want to keep them, copy them to any location outside of C:\users\eUSERNAME]\AppData\Local\Box\Box\ (such as your desktop). Proceeding with the steps below deletes these files.

  • You may need to show hidden folders to see \AppData.

  • Delete this folder: C:\users\uUSERNAME]\AppData\Local\Box\Box.

  • From RegEdit, delete the registry entries under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Box/Box to clear Box preferences.

  • Restart the Box Drive and follow the prompt to log back in.

Monitor if  your cache limit will work from here. If it occurs again, please let us know.
