I only have the free Box Individual plan, but some of my files were recently randomly archived, which I did not request. Box Archive is supposedly only for Enterprise users.

What’s going on and how do I prevent such Archives in the future?

Hi @brentgray

Welcome to Box Community, and we’re glad to assist!

Yes, it’s true that Box Archive is only available for Enterprise Advanced accounts. For more context, could you explain what happened to your Box contents that gave you the impression they were archived?

Thanks for posting, and we wait to your reply!

Sometime in the last 3-5 days, a new folder appeared on my Windows 11 hard drive called “Archived - Box Sync” and several (but not nearly all) of my Box folders and files appeared there, and at the same time disappeared from my main Box folder. I had to manually copy them back to the Box folder.

I am theorizing that this happened at the same time that Box Sync officially went away (at least for my account) and was replaced by Box Drive, because the name of my main Box folder used to be “Box Sync”, but is now just “Box.”

Hi @brentgray

Thank you for the additional information!

It seems that you have installed Box Drive, and run the automatic Box Sync uninstaller. This feature comes with the latest Box Drive version.

During the cleanup stage, Box Drive will only remove files that were fully synced to the cloud. Any content not yet uploaded to Box is preserved and moved into a folder named “Archived - Box Sync” on the user’s device, so it’s not lost.

You can find more information through this article

Hope it answers your question! Let us know if you need additional assistance.

Hmm, interesting.

I installed Box Drive and uninstalled Box Sync several weeks ago when Box Drive was first announced, and it has been working fine. (I did not do a new installation recently, at least not that I know of.)

I noted, however, that the name of my Box folder on my PC remained “Box Sync”, which I know is true because my favorites shortcuts in Excel have been working fine with that names path.

However, after experiencing this Archive anomaly this past week, the Box folder name on my PC must have changed to “Box”, because my favorites shortcuts stopped working.

I don’t know how all of this is related to the Archived files issue, but it all happened at the same time.
