Hi.. On the Android app, my phone or tablet freezes when I open folders with a large number of photos. I can’t scroll through the photos. I’m even having issues with photo previews in these folders. Even in less crowded folders, it takes a long time for the photos to load. These problems have been going on for a long time. I don’t encounter these issues on iOS. I’d like a solution to this problem…

Phone: Android 14
Tablet: Android 16

Box version: 7.3.757

Hi @Pardus

Welcome to Box Community, and we’re glad to assist!

Here are the information you need to consider that causes this issue on your Box for Android application:

  1. Having folders containing hundreds or thousands of files can cause severe lag, freezing, and scale limitations when the mobile app attempts to fetch and render metadata and image previews at once.
  2. When opening folders with many photos, Box for Android attempts to download and generate previews/thumbnails over the active connection. High latency, network interruptions, or slow connection speeds cause the application to hang or freeze while waiting on multiple concurrent network requests.
  3. Long-term usage without clearing cache or reinstalling can cause stale cached states or high resource utilization on Android.

You can resolve it by following these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Restructure Large Folders (Best Practice)

    • Split large photo directories into subfolders (e.g., grouped by month, project, or event) to avoid having a massive number of immediate items in a single folder.
  2. Verify & Test Network Connection

    • Test the behavior on a fast, stable Wi-Fi connection vs. cellular data.
    • In the Box Android app settings, run the Connection Diagnostic Test.
    • Test the same folder in a mobile browser via m.box.com to confirm if the latency is isolated to thumbnail rendering in the native app or backend network latency.
  3. Clear App Cache & Perform a Clean Reinstall

    • Clear the Box app cache/data via your Android device settings (Settings > Apps > Box > Storage > Clear Cache / Clear Data).
    • Uninstall and reinstall the Box application to ensure no corrupted cache or temporary database entries are degrading performance.
  4. Workaround for Immediate Access

    • Use the mobile web interface (m.box.com) or the Box Web Application in your mobile browser, which handles paginated photo browsing and previews differently than the native Android client.

Hope it works! Let us know if you have additional questions.

Thank you for your response. I followed your advice and cleared the cache, and even performed a reinstallation afterwards. Yes, it is a bit better now, but overall I still can't achieve the same smoothness as on IOS. I think the developers need to focus a bit more on performance on the Android side. I hope this will be taken into consideration.
