The directions on how to set up two factor authentication includes going to account settings.  I don't have that option.

How do I take care of this?

Hi @Homer, welcome to the Box Community! I’d be glad to assist.

The most common reason the 2-Step Verification section is not visible in your Account Settings is that your organization uses Single Sign-On (SSO) in Required Mode. When SSO is required by your company's Box admin, the 2FA setting is hidden from individual Account Settings because multi-factor authentication is managed by your SSO provider, not by Box directly.

To resolve:

  1. Check if SSO applies to you:
If you log into Box using your company's login page (rather than directly at box.com with a Box-specific password), you're likely using SSO.

  2. Contact your IT/Box Admin:
Since MFA is controlled by your SSO provider in this case, reach out to your internal IT team or Box Admin. They can:
    • Confirm whether SSO Required is enabled for your account
    • Help you set up MFA through your organization's SSO provider
    • If needed, exempt you from MFA requirements temporarily

  3. If you're on a Personal, Starter, or Business plan (no corporate admin):
Reach out directly to Box Product Support by submitting a ticket for assistance. If you’re unable to open a case, access the ticket form here.

  4. If SSO is NOT required for your account (you log in with a Box username/password directly):
    1. Click your account icon (top-right corner of Box)
    2. Select Account Settings
    3. Go to the Account tab
    4. Scroll to the 2-Step Verification section and click Set Up
    5. Choose your preferred method: Authenticator App, Security Key, SMS, or Email

Hi Marguerite,

Welcome to the Box Community! I'm happy to help.

This would be something our Box Support team would like to discuss with you and may require specific account information.  I've gone ahead and created a ticket for you so that an agent can work directly with you on looking into this.

Best,

Please check your email for details and updates. Thanks for your patience!

Did this solve your issue? Choose your next step.

To deepen your understanding of Box security and 2FA, here are some helpful resources from Box University:

  1. Security & Compliance Courses (Admin) - Learn how to keep your Box enterprise secure with 2-factor authentication, single sign-on, and more.

  2. Box Certified Admin Program - Covers two-factor authentication for managed and external users as part of a comprehensive admin curriculum.

Hope this helps! Feel free to share more details about your setup (e.g., do you log in via SSO?) and we’ll help narrow it down further. 😊
