The AI-First Era and the Importance of Metadata
​@Scott Picanco Box described the current business landscape as an "AI-first era." He explained that as AI agents become integral to the workforce, the massive amount of unstructured data generated by businesses becomes a major challenge.

Key benefits include: better decision-making through higher quality data, the ability to power smarter agentic workflows (e.g., in Box Automate), and significantly accelerated content search and discovery.

Recent Product Updates: Metadata Taxonomy Improvements
Piotr Truch discussed product updates, focusing on the new metadata taxonomy improvements released in August. Based on customer feedback, the user interface for navigating deep, multi-level taxonomies has been redesigned to be more intuitive and consistent across Box products.

The Future Roadmap for Box Metadata
Piotr then unveiled several key features on the product roadmap:

• New Field Types (Linked Items): To address limitations in current field types, a "Linked Items" field will be introduced. This will allow users to create cross-references between different files (e.g., linking a master contract to all related NDAs and SOWs) without needing them to be in the same folder, all while respecting user permissions. This is targeted for release by the end of the year.
• Audit Trail: Planned for the end of 2026, this feature will provide an immutable, exportable log of all changes made to metadata instances and templates. This is a critical feature for highly regulated industries like life sciences and financial services that require a complete version history for compliance.
• Democratized Metadata Templates: A major upcoming release aimed at removing the bottleneck of admin-only template creation. This will empower end-users to create, manage, and share their own templates. The system will be built on a concept of "namespaces" to group templates logically (e.g., by department) and will feature granular, role-based access controls to ensure security and proper governance. A Design Partner Program (DPP) for this feature is planned for the end of October.

Q&A Session

The presenters addressed several questions from the audience. Key topics included:

• the desire for the Power Automate connector to support reading and writing metadata (currently requires direct API calls but is being explored)
• the potential for M365 Co-pilot to leverage linked documents (a goal for the team),
• the roadmap for modifying taxonomy fields in Automate (in progress),
• and the possibility of adding more field types like user references (a user field type is planned).

A discussion also covered the request to integrate metadata views directly into the default folder view, which presenters noted is currently the primary function of Box Apps.
