How can I edit my “open” options. In one file I can open in Microsoft Excel Online, but in another that was shared with me I can only open in Google Sheets. But when I try to log in to Google it doesn’t work. I’d like to be able to open and edit in Microsoft Excel Online.

👋 Hi @Carrie, welcome to the Box Community!

Box for Office for web and the Box Excel Online Previewer, make sure both integrations are enabled ✅. After logging into Box, navigate to “Integrations” to verify and enable them if needed.

📝 Note: The Box Excel Online Previewer only supports the .xlsx file type. If you're unable to view or open a shared file via Excel Online, it may be a different file type that isn’t currently supported. Please double-check the file extension.

If you'd like to choose which integrated application opens by default when using the ‘Open’ or ‘Open with’ button on the file preview page, you can go to the Integrations settings.

  • Click your initials in the upper-right corner.
  • Select Account Settings.
  • Go to the Integrations tab.
  • Scroll down to Default Integrated Applications.
  • Choose your preferred default app for each file type.
  • Click Save Changes.

If you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out. 😊

Hi @Jey Bueno Box. Thank you for your response. Both Box for Office for web and the Box Excel Online Previewer integrations are enabled. I am able to edit in browser for all files I’ve created, but I cannot edit in browser in the one file that was shared with me. It was shared with multiple users and all other users have the ability to edit in browser. The file is an .xlsx file type, but is labeled as a V578, does that mean anything? Other files on my page are labeled at V2.

You're very welcome, and thank you for following up with more details about the issue.

The V578 refers to the version number of that specific file. Box overwrites a file and updates the version each time users edit the file using an online editor, use the Upload New Version button on the web app, etc.

Since you're able to edit other files in the browser, it's likely that the problem is related to your access level on the specific file that was shared. We recommend reaching out to the file owner to confirm whether you have ‘Editor’ permissions. If needed, they can re-invite you with the correct access.

For reference, see Understanding Collaborator Permission Levels.

If your permissions are confirmed and the issue still persists, try clearing cache/cookies in your active browser before logging in to Box.com (web app) and access the file afterwards. You can also try switching to a different browser. That often resolves unexpected behavior with online editing. 😊
