Worsharing of Revit Files using Box Cloud File Server

We have tried worksharing function using an AEC Collection license via local area network (LAN) and it was successful.  However, our company has just started using Box Cloud File Server which provides secure and centralized platform for storing, sharing and working on digital files.  In our attempts, it was not successful.  We would like to know, is there a way in order to utilize worksharing function using an AEC Collection license via Box Cloud File Server?

👋 Hi @Christopher De Leon, welcome to the Box Community!

We currently do not have documentation confirming that Revit worksharing is supported with an AEC Collection license through Box Cloud File Server.

Based on general guidance for cloud file services and typical AEC worksharing requirements, most worksharing systems that depend on LAN-style file locking are not fully compatible with pure cloud file servers. Tools such as Autodesk Revit often require consistent file system behavior, atomic file locking, and low-latency access, which cloud-mounted drives may not always provide.

Because of that, I’d recommend the following:

  • Check with Autodesk to confirm whether your specific Revit/AEC setup is supported on a cloud-mounted environment like Box Cloud File Server.
  • Test with a small pilot project before using it in production, especially to validate locking behavior and file integrity.
  • If the application requires SMB/NFS-style file share behavior, consider using a traditional supported file server for the live central model and Box for sharing, archiving, or distribution.
  • If you plan to use this in production, please open a Box Support ticket with your environment details so our Support team can advise more specifically.

Thanks, and have a great day!

Hi Ms. Jay

Thank you very much for having me in Box community.  I am glad to receive a very prompt response from you.

I noted all your advice.  At this time, we have gathered information which let us learn more about the limitations of each product, licenses, and collections.  I am looking forward to discuss more interesting topics in Box community.

Best Regards.

Thanks for your response, Christopher! We’re really glad to have you in the Box community. We are looking forward to hearing your thoughts as you dive deeper into everything Box has to offer. 🙌

@Jey Bueno Box

Hi Ms. Jey

Thank you again for your kind response.  For this new concern, I lowered down my goal from cloud work-sharing to just file uploading to a cloud operated database by Autodesk.  I appreciate your recommendations, and I indicated each of my responses below using italic/bold texts.

  • Check with Autodesk to confirm whether your specific Revit/AEC setup is supported on a cloud-mounted environment like Box Cloud File Server.  – Autodesk already confirmed that a Revit/AEC setup is not a “generally” supported cloud-mounted environment like a Box Cloud File Server.  The word “generally” refers to all cloud servers such as Autodesk owned and our company internal Box cloud server unless we will purchase another product such as Forma Build.
  • Test with a small pilot project before using it in production, especially to validate locking behavior and file integrity. – We tested it already using our internal box cloud file server.  Uploading was permitted but work-sharing was not allowed.
  • If the application requires SMB/NFS-style file share behavior, consider using a traditional supported file server for the live central model and Box for sharing, archiving, or distribution. – This approach is permitted in our company’s internally operation.  However, important features of Autodesk are missing such as 3D model review tools which are similar to Navisworks Simulate capabilities.
  • If you plan to use this in production, please open a Box Support ticket with your environment details so our Support team can advise more specifically. – Noted and thank you very much.  Your responses are increasing both our technical knowledge and administrative vocabulary.
