Unable to upload new files, New+ tab is greyed out.

This issue is occurring because “Restrict content creation” is enabled at the enterprise level. When this setting is turned on, only administrators (and co-admins with specific privileges) are allowed to create or upload content at the root level (the main “All Files” page). Managed users are blocked from creating folders or uploading files directly to the root, regardless of their individual folder-level permissions.

How to resolve:

✅ Option 1: The user uploads inside an existing folder (recommended)

• The user should navigate into a subfolder that the admin has already created and granted her access to (with Editor permissions or above).
• Once inside a collaborated subfolder, the ‘New’ and ‘Upload’ buttons will become active, and she will be able to upload files successfully.
   

✅ Option 2: The admin disables the root restriction

If the organization wants to allow managed users to create folders and upload files at the root level, a Box Admin can disable this restriction:

1. Log in to the Box Admin Console.
2. In the left navigation pane, click Enterprise Settings.
3. At the top of the page, click the Content & Sharing tab.
4. Scroll to the Content Creation section.
5. Locate Restrict content creation and uncheck/clear this option.
6. Click Save.

Option 3: The admin provisions a root folder for the user

If the admin wants to keep the root restriction enabled for security but still allow this user to have her own space:

• The admin can create a new folder at the root level and invite the user to it as a collaborator with Editor (or higher) permissions. This folder will then appear on her “Files” page, and she can upload files freely inside it.
