Hi @Yifei, welcome to the Box Community!

When a partial restoration like this happens, it is usually due to a few specific system behaviors or permission settings. Here are the most common reasons this occurs and how you can recover the remaining files:

  1. Parent-child folder deletion conflicts
If you tried to restore the entire folder structure or perform bulk deletions at once, simultaneous processing of parent and child folders can cause conflicts.

    • To fix: Go to your Trash folder and restore your subfolders or individual files manually rather than restoring the parent folder all at once.

  2. Sub-items deleted prior to the parent folder
Restoring a parent folder does not automatically restore files or subfolders that were individually deleted before the parent folder was deleted.

    • To fix: Use the search bar inside your Trash folder, filter by “Only search inside of Trash” and “Items I own” or “Items I deleted,” and locate the missing files to restore them individually.

  3. Active legal holds or retention policies
If your organization has active retention policies or legal holds, certain files may be hidden from your view or preserved differently.

    • To fix: If you cannot find the files in your personal Trash, reach out to your Box Administrator. They can check the Admin Console under Content Manager to view and restore protected or hidden files.

  4. File name conflicts
If a file with the exact same name already exists in your active destination folder, the restore process will skip that file to prevent overwriting.

    • To fix: Check your active destination folder for any files sharing the same names as your missing content. Rename those active files, then return to the Trash and restore the remaining items.

  5. 14-day grace period for purged files
If the files are completely missing from your Trash and have been permanently purged, please contact Box Support immediately so we can check on recovery options before the 14-day window closes.

I hope this helps you get the rest of your files restored! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
