We can not add this user - she had a freemium account with the same email address, deleted it, and now I can not send her a new invite from our org account nor can she create a new account without the invitation.

Hello!

If a user previously deleted a personal or free Box account, their email address may remain temporarily associated with a pending deactivation record. This can prevent the address from being invited through the Admin Console or used to recreate the account.

You may see messages such as:

  • “Email already used in a Box account but not associated with an enterprise”

  • “Invitation available for freemium account holders”

As a first step, try adding the user manually:

  1. Go to Admin Console > Users and Groups > Managed Users.

  2. Select Add Users > Add Users Manually.

  3. Enter the user’s name and email address, then click Save.

  4. If an error appears, click Save again. In some cases, the second attempt successfully sends the invitation or adds the user.

For additional guidance, see Add a user that has already created a FREE Box account.

If the invitation still fails and the user cannot access their former account, please contact Box Product Support. Support may need to clear the inactive or orphaned account record associated with the email address. Once the record is released, the user can be added as a managed user or receive a standard enterprise invitation.

For a related example, see “Invitation available for freemium account holders” message when adding a managed user.
