Is there a way for a co-admin to override an Enterprise setting on a folder? I would like to allow Editors on one folder to invite Collaborators. I’d rather not make the change for our entire instance.

As a follow-up, if I deselect this Enterprise setting does it default to having “Only Owners and Co-owners can send collaborator invites”?

Hi @jorowi, thanks for reaching out. I’d be happy to assist.

Security and sharing settings follow a "most restrictive setting applies" rule. Enterprise-wide settings configured under Admin Console > Enterprise Settings > Content & Sharing set the baseline boundary for the entire account. Individual folder settings can only make access more restrictive, not more permissive than enterprise settings.

Therefore, if Restrict invites ("Only admins, folder owners, or co-owners can invite collaborators") is enabled at the Enterprise level, an admin or co-admin cannot override this on a single folder to grant Editors the ability to invite collaborators. To allow Editors on specific folders to send invites, the Enterprise-level restriction must be cleared/disabled first.

When you deselect/clear the Restrict invites setting in the Enterprise Settings:

  • The default state for Restrict invites at the enterprise level is cleared (disabled). When cleared, regular permission rules apply across the tenant, meaning users with Editor permissions and above are allowed to invite collaborators and groups by default.
  • Does it default to restricting invites per folder? No. Disabling the Enterprise setting does not automatically turn on "Only Owners and Co-owners can send collaborator invites" on individual folders. Instead, folder-level invitation settings remain unchecked by default unless a folder owner, co-owner, or admin explicitly opens Folder Settings > Collaboration > Invitation Restrictions on that specific folder and checks "Only folder owners and co-owners can send collaborator invites".

If your goal is to allow Editors to invite collaborators on only specific folders while keeping other folders restricted:

  1. Go to Admin Console > Enterprise Settings > Content & Sharing > Collaborating on Content and deselect / clear the Restrict invites setting.
  2. Navigate to the sensitive folders where you want to keep restrictions in place, go to Folder Settings > Collaboration > Invitation Restrictions, and enable "Only folder owners and co-owners can send collaborator invites".
  3. Leave that folder-level checkbox disabled on the specific folder where you want Editors to have invite permissions.

If you are looking for a specific feature (such as granular folder-level overrides of enterprise-wide restrictions), I highly recommend sharing this as a feature request in Box Pulse.

Thanks, and please let us know if you have any other concerns.
