I am the Primary Administrator of my business account, but my current session is trapped in a Free/Personal OAuth mapping loop.

When I try to update my primary email from [removed by moderator] to [removed by moderator] , the web panel fails with: "The Box account is already linked to another Google account." Attempting to change or force a master password returns a 401 Unauthorized API error because no standalone password exists in the master database.

Because of this loop, I am blocked from submitting a traditional help desk ticket. Can a Box Community Moderator please manually escalate this thread and create a backend support case so a Tier 2 technician can purge the broken Google social login mapping records on my profile?

Hi @djc, thank you for reaching out! Let me assist you.

Your account is experiencing two interconnected issues:

  1. The "already linked to another Google account" error: This occurs because your Box account's primary email is currently tied to a Google OAuth identity. Box's authentication layer sees a conflict when you attempt to re-map or change that email, because the Google account association is managed at the identity provider level, not just within Box's web panel.

  2. The 401 Unauthorized error when setting a password: This happens because your account was originally created or authenticated exclusively via Google OAuth, meaning no standalone Box password exists in the system. Without a native Box password, certain API-level and admin console operations that require password-based authentication will return a 401.

Before attempting any email changes, you need to establish a native Box password for your account. This will also resolve the 401 Unauthorized error. If haven’t done so already:

  1. Log into Box (via your current Google OAuth session)
  2. Navigate to Account Settings (click your profile icon in the top-right corner)
  3. Click the Account tab
  4. Scroll to the Authentication section
  5. Select Create Password (or "Set Password")
  6. Follow the prompts to establish a standalone Box password

If you’re unable to create a password, you can also try a password reset: https://app.box.com/reset and enter the email address associated with your Box account.

After establishing a standalone password:

  1. Go to Account Settings > Account tab
  2. Locate the Login and Email section
  3. Update your primary email to your new email address
  4. Box will send a verification email to the new address — you must confirm it before the change takes effect

If you’re still unable to change your email and cannot sign in to support page to open a case, kindly access this ticket form. Thank you!
