Accidents happen, but they don't have to result in permanent data loss. Box has introduced a highly requested Restore Deleted Users capability directly in the Admin Console, providing admins with a powerful safety net against accidental deletions.

What You Need to Know

Admins and co-admins with the Manage users permission can now restore deleted managed users within a 30-day window of deletion. Here is how the restoration works based on when the deletion occurred:

  • Deleted 14 days ago or less: Restoring the user fully reactivates their account and automatically restores all of their owned files, folders, collaborations, shared links, and group memberships.

  • Deleted 15 to 30 days ago: The user account is reactivated, but their owned content is not automatically restored. However, if the content is still in the user's Trash, they can easily recover it themselves after logging back in.

  • Content Transferred during deletion: If the user's content was already transferred to another recipient during the deletion process, only the user account itself will be reactivated.

How to Restore a User in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Navigate to Admin Console > Users & Groups > Deleted Users.

  2. Select the user(s) you wish to recover and click Restore.

  3. Review the restoration details, choose whether to automatically notify the user via email, and click Restore to confirm.

Once restored, the user will immediately reappear in your Managed Users tab. Please note that this feature is available for organizations on Business+ plans and above, and applies exclusively to managed users.
