How to add second admin?

Our admin user can’t promote my regular member user to Co-Admin or Admin and there seems to be no support email or ticket option? What is this product supposed to be about? Posting my issue in a community support forum to get a ticket opened is the worst enterprise product experience I have had in my professional career of 25 years in IT imho.

There are two primary reasons why an admin or co-admin might be unable to promote a regular member user to a Co-Admin or Admin role:

  1. Unverified email domain (most common security restriction):

    • For Co-Admin Promotion:
      • For security purposes, a user cannot be given the Co-Admin role if their primary email address uses a public domain (such as Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo) or an unverified domain.
      • To grant Co-Admin privileges, the user’s account must use an email address on a domain that has been verified by your enterprise (via Admin Console > Enterprise Settings > Custom Setup > Domain Management).
         
    • For Admin Promotion:
      • Similarly, to transfer the primary Admin role to another user, both the current admin’s email domain and the target managed user’s email domain must be verified domains.
      • If there are no verified domains, an error will display when attempting to transfer admin privileges.
         
  2. Co-Admin permission limitations:

    • If the user attempting to perform the promotion is a Co-Admin (rather than the primary Admin), they can only grant or modify Co-Admin permissions if they have been explicitly granted the “Users and Groups” administrative permission.
    • Additionally, Co-Admins do not have the permission to manage other Co-Admin accounts or change the primary Admin’s settings.
       

✅ To resolve:

  • Ensure that the user’s email domain is verified in your Box Admin Console under Enterprise Settings > Custom Setup.
  • If you are a Co-Admin attempting this change, verify that your account has the “Manage users” permission enabled, or have the primary Admin perform the promotion.
