Hi @BOXCollaborator, welcome to the Box Community! 👋

In Box, an enterprise can only have one Primary Admin at a time, and a Co-Admin cannot modify the Admin’s permissions or elevate their own role to Admin.

To become the Primary Admin, the role must be transferred directly by the current Primary Admin. Here is how that process works, along with the steps required:

Requirements before starting:

  • The transfer must be performed by the current Primary Admin while logged into their Box account.
  • Both the current Admin and the user receiving the Admin role must use email addresses with verified domains in Box Domain Management.

Steps for the current Primary Admin to transfer the Admin role

  1. Log in to Box as the Primary Admin and navigate to Admin Console > Users & Groups.
  2. Click the Managed Users tab.
  3. Click on the Admin account in the user list (it will display Admin in the Role column).
  4. In the Role and Access Permissions section, click Edit.
  5. In the Role field, click the Change Account Admin link.
  6. In the New Admin field, enter the name or email address of the user/co-admin and select them from the list.
  7. Under Select Your Role, choose a new role for the outgoing admin (e.g., Co-Admin to retain administrative access or Member).
  8. Click Save Changes.
  9. The current Primary Admin will receive a verification email. They must click the confirmation link in that email to finalize the transfer.

What if the current Primary Admin has left the company?

If the previous Primary Admin is no longer with your organization and their account cannot be accessed:

  1. If possible, contact the former admin to have them log in and follow the transfer steps above.
  2. If access is not possible, a representative from your organization will need to submit a ticket with Box Support to follow the Admin Transfer Protocol for departed admins, which requires identity and account verification. Click here to access the ticket form if you’re unable to sign in to support page or you’re not seeing the option to open a case.
