Hi there - I have just joined Box. I have an agency trying to share documents with me but on my end I am getting: “this shared file or folder has been removed or is unavailable to you.”

On their end it says “Invitations could not be sent to the following people because external collaboration is restricted  by either your or their enterprise”

My colleagues with the same account settings are able to access just fine.

Hi Jenny

The issue you’re experiencing where you see “this shared file or folder has been removed or is unavailable to you,” while the agency sees “Invitations could not be sent… because external collaboration is restricted by either your or their enterprise,” suggests a collaboration restriction related to external sharing settings.

Here are a few things to be aware of:

  1. External Collaboration Restrictions: Your enterprise or the agency’s enterprise may have policies restricting external collaborators to certain allowlisted domains only. If your domain or user account is not on the allowed list, invitations cannot be sent or accepted.

  2. Invitation Acceptance: If an invitation was never successfully sent or accepted due to these restrictions, the shared folder will not appear for you.

  3. Account Differences: Since your colleagues with the same account settings can access the content, it might indicate that your specific user account or email domain is not properly included in the allowlist or there are additional security requirements (e.g., multi-factor authentication) affecting your access.

  4. Wrong Account Sign-in: Also verify you are signed into Box with the exact account/email address that the agency invited.

Recommended next steps:

  • Confirm with your IT or Box admin that your user account and domain are included in the external collaboration allowlist.
  • Verify you are logged into Box with the correct email address that received the invite.
  • Check if any additional security requirements like MFA are blocking your acceptance of the invite.
  • Ask the agency to confirm they have your correct email and that your domain is allowed on their side as well.

My team shared a Box link with me, but it says “this shared file or link is removed or it is unavailable to you”. However, my other teammates can access it.
