Hi everyone,

I’m James, a Customer Success Manager at Box based in London.

I wanted to take a moment to talk about watermarking—a crucial tool for protecting digital content.

Watermarking is widely used across industries to protect sensitive information—such as legal contracts, financial reports, patient records, media content, and educational materials—by embedding identifying details that deter unauthorized sharing and help trace leaks.

Box has exciting new features coming. These include customisable watermarking that organisations can tailor and apply automatically through access policies. Additionally, Box will extend watermarking capabilities to video content, allowing secure protection across a wider range of media types.

We’d love to hear from you:

  • How are you currently using watermarking?

  • What specific watermarking requirements does your business or industry have?

Looking forward to your thoughts!

@jamesduncan-box great share!  From a partner perspective, policy-driven watermarking can also be automatically invoked for any outbound shared email payload when a customer has Box partner mxHERO’s Mail2Cloud platform deployed with Box.  With the mxHERO solution, outbound email attachments are stripped and automatically uplifted into Box based on classifications, thematic rule-based setups or for all conditions (completely customizable on-condition or by-rule via mxHERO to meet a customer’s specific use-case aims.  Once done, mxHERO via the Box Intelligent Content Cloud API, can automate invocation of watermarking as a feature.   This would allow an improved compliance and security outcome as senders would maintain control of their ‘sent’ content payload even after sending it, client’s gain a DLP or data loss prevention win, a compliance win, and with the ability of mxHERO to  automate invocation of Box features like watermarking on-condition, the process then gets automated.  Essentially mxHERO extends Box’s value to the email paradigm for users ensuring post-send controls and may include such automation as (a) auto-expiration of links (b) auto-invocation of READ ONLY setttings on condition, watermarking, etc.  Watermarking is a very important consideration for customers and when they can extend Box’s capabilities on that front all the way out to the end-user, it’s a super power.  Great share James and Team Box!!!

@DonHammons great post.

I appreciate how the integration of mxHERO’s Mail2Cloud platform with Box enhances security and compliance for outbound emails. Automating watermarking not only boosts data loss prevention but also gives senders greater control over their content.

@jamesduncan-box you’re right and thanks for your post.  With mxHERO, we can ‘conditionally’ invoke watermarking via API on content that might be shared via an end-user on an outbound email.  As such, when that condition is met (e.g. sensitive financial data, PII, or otherwise), mxHERO automates the invocation of Box Watermarking (which can be customized).  Here is a video example of it in action:
