Uninstalling Box Sync Manually

Important   Box Drive v2.4, which will be released in mid-March 2019, includes a Sync uninstaller that makes it seamless to transition from Box Sync to Box Drive.  The uninstaller automatically uninstalls Box Sync and then cleans up the remaining Box Sync files for you, limiting the content footprint on your device.  Here are details about this automated Sync uninstall process.

Before uninstalling Box Sync, please quit the application by clicking on the Box Sync icon in your system tray (Window) or menu bar (macOS) and select Quit.

Note  Following the steps below will delete content contained in the Box Sync folder. Before following these instructions, verify that your files have been synced (look for the blue check mark beside your folder or file's name).

Select the installation instructions for your computer:

  1. Uninstall Box Sync:
    1. Quit Box Sync by clicking on the Box Sync icon in your menu bar and selecting Quit.
    2. Open your System Preferences > Extensions Finder and un-select the Box Sync Finder Extension.
    3. Delete Box Sync.app from your Applications folder.
  2. Locate your Box Sync folder and delete it only if all of the content is synced up to Box.
    • The default location is /Users/USERNAME/Box Sync
  3. (Optional) Delete the remaining Box Sync components
    • Delete the following items if they exist:
      • /Users/USERNAME/Library/Logs/Box/Box Sync/
      • /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application Support/Box/Box Sync/
      • /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.box.sync.bootstrapper
      • /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.box.sync.iconhelper
    • Delete the Box Sync password items in your Keychain:
      1. Open Keychain Access from Applications > Utilities.
      2. Click on login under Keychains in the top left.
      3. Click on Passwords under Category in the bottom left.
      4. Right-click on any Box Sync items and select Delete "Box Sync"

  1. Uninstall Box Sync from Control Panel > Programs and Features
  2. (Optional) Delete the remaining Box Sync folders:
    • C:\Users\USERNAME\Box Sync
      • Do not delete your Box Sync folder if it contains content that is not synced up to Box.
      • If you do not want to delete the old Box Sync folder you can rename it (ex: "Box Sync Old") to break the association between Box Sync and your Box.com.  This will avoid any confusion when installing a new instance of Box Sync.
    • C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Box Sync

Note   The folder AppData is hidden by default on Windows systems. You will need to show hidden folders in Windows to see this folder.
