Installing/Uninstalling Box Sync

Box Sync is a productivity tool that allows you to mirror data stored on Box to your desktop. You can then navigate and modify content stored on the Box website through your computer’s native file browsing interface, without using a web browser. Content that syncs down to your computer are available for offline access. If you make changes to the synced files locally, these changes automatically sync back up to your Box account.

 

Installing Box Sync

System Requirements

  • Mac:
    • OS X 10.12
    • OS X 10.11
    • OS X 10.10
    • HFS or HFS+ formatted hard drive
  • Windows:
    • 10 32-bit and 64-bit
    • 8.1 64-bit
    • 8 64-bit
    • 7 32-bit and 64-bit
    • NTFS formatted hard drive
    • Microsoft .NET Framework .NET 4.5.2 or greater*
*Microsoft ended support for .NET framework 4.0, 4.5 and 4.5.1 on Jan 12 2016. We encourage customers to upgrade to the latest version of .NET in order to continue receiving technical support

 

Installation Instructions: 

Mac:

  • Download the Box Sync Installer DMG file from here.
  • Open the DMG file.
  • Drag the Box Sync app icon into your Applications folder.
  • Double-click on Box Sync in your Applications folder.
  • Your synced files are stored in a new folder called Box Sync. You can access this folder from the Favorites section in the left pane of your Finder window.

Windows:

  • Download the Box Sync Setup EXE file.
  • Open the EXE file from the Windows folder and follow the installation instructions.
  • Box Sync will start automatically once the installation is complete.
  • Your synced files are stored in a new folder called Box Sync. You can access this folder from the Favorites section in the left pane of Windows Explorer. Alternately, right-click the Box Sync icon in the system tray (bottom right corner of your screen - near the clock) and click Open Sync Folder.

Attempts to install Box's desktop applications on Windows machines may result in the following error message, which is often the result of Windows Installer or .NET Framework corruption:

Uninstalling Box Sync

Before uninstalling Box Sync, please be sure to quit the application from the menu in the task bar.

 

Note: Following the steps below will delete content contained in the Box Sync folder. Before following these instructions, verify that your files have been synced (look for the blue check mark beside your folder of file's name).

 

Uninstallation Instructions:

Mac:

  • Quit Box Sync from the menu in the task bar.
  • If you plan to re-install Box Sync, locate your current Box Sync folder to either rename it, delete it, or move it to a different location.
    • This will ensure that you can install a brand new Box Sync folder when the time comes
  • For users on Mac OS X 10.10+, open System Preferences > Extensions. Click Finder in the left-hand panel and unselect Box Sync Finder Extension.
  • Delete Box Sync from your Applications folder.
  • Navigate to the Library folder in your user profile
    • Note: The library folder is hidden by default. Follow the steps below to locate the Library folder:
      • Click on Go in the upper left hand toolbar
      • Hold the Alt/Option key on your keyboard and select the Library folder
  • In the Library folder, delete the items below:
    • Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Library/Logs/Box/Box Sync/
    • Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Box/Box Sync/
  • Navigate to your Macintosh HD library
    • Click the magnifying glass in your upper right corner of the screen
    • In the Spotlight Search, type Macintosh HD
    • Select Macintosh HD
    • In the Finder window, select the Library folder
  • Delete these items in the Macintosh HD Library
    • HD/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.box.sync.bootstrapper
    • Macintosh HD/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.box.sync.iconhelper
  • Delete the Box Sync password items in Keychain. Open Keychain Access from Applications > Utilities. Click on login under Keychains in the top left. Then click on Passwords under Category. Find the Box Sync items and select Delete "Box Sync" in the right-click menu.

 

Windows:

  • Uninstall Box Sync from Control Panel > Programs and Features. In Windows 10, you must use "Programs and Features" to uninstall Box Sync. You cannot uninstall Box Sync from "Apps & Features".
  • Delete the following folders (Note: AppData is hidden by default):
    • C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Box Sync\
    • C:\Users\[username]\Box Sync\
