Box Sync is a productivity tool that allows you to mirror data stored on Box to your desktop. You can then navigate and modify content stored on the Box website through your computer’s native file browsing interface, without using a web browser. Content that syncs down to your computer are available for offline access. If you make changes to the synced files locally, these changes automatically sync back up to your Box account.

Box Sync 4.0 currently requires the following:

What’s New in Box Sync 4.0?
Syncing 100,000 Items
Box Sync 4.0 does not limit the number of files and folders that can be synced at any given time. Box has successfully tested and synced 100,000 items in various scenarios under ideal conditions. We recommend that users Sync under this threshold to ensure best performance.
Improved Overall Performance
Box Sync 4.0 uses an “always watching” strategy to report any changes that occurred in Box or on your computer. This strategy now allows Box Sync to receive notifications on each file that changed in either system, thus providing quicker and accurate reports. This change allows Box Sync 4.0 to deliver better performance, particularly when syncing a large number of files.
In comparison, Box Sync 3.x scanned each system first and then repeated the process even if only one file was changed in either system thus making it a time-consuming process.
Improved CPU Usage
Box Sync 4.0 consumes 25% less CPU than our earlier versions. While this improvement is significant, we anticipate improving it even further with each release.
Root-Level File Syncing
Box Sync 4.0 allows you to directly sync files in the Box Sync folder.
In Sync 3.x, this action creates a separate "Default Sync Folder" and the synced file is moved to that folder.
In Sync 4.0, the file is synced in the Box Sync folder itself. When you sync a file that resides in a nested folder, you also see the file being synced in each parent folder connected to this file.
In Sync 3.x, this kind of syncing is not possible.
Deletion from 'Box Sync' Folder
When a folder or file is deleted from the desktop Box Sync folder, it will also be deleted from the Box Web Application. This is a change in the prior functionality of Box Sync 4. Previously, deleting a folder on the desktop would unsync the folder while it would remain in your list of folders on Box.com. Upon deletion of a folder, you will receive a notification that the folder has been deleted from Box.
Removing a file from the Box Sync folder will also delete the file from the Box Web Application.
In both Windows Sync and Mac Sync, you can right click any file or folder to get a link to a file, email a link to a file, view a file on Box, or lock or unlock a file.
- The Copy Box link option copies the corresponding link for the file to your clipboard. You can paste this link into any other application.
- Email Box link opens your mail client with a link to the Box file already populated in the email's body.
- If you select View on Box, the file is opened in your default browser. You can then comment, assign tasks, view the version history, or lock/unlock the file.

Notifications when Files Cannot Sync
If an item cannot be synced, Box Sync 4.0 immediately displays a notification on your local system along with the name of the problem item.
Click the Box Sync desktop icon (the b icon) to obtain additional details on the problem item.

Enterprise Deployment Enhancements
- Silent automatic updates – Seamless, automatic updates ensure that you are always running the latest version of Box Sync. Updates occur in the background and users are automatically updated to the next release.
- Enterprise deployable installer – Enterprises can install Box Sync using MSI on Windows and DMG on Macs
